Community Mental Health

Bay Arenac Behavioral Health (BABH)

We are your community mental health provider. This year marks the 40th anniversary of legislation that paved the way for community-based mental health services throughout America. Commonly known as P.L. 88-164, the legislation provided for the construction of community mental health centers. The law authorized federal grants for construction of public or non-profit community mental health centers. Required services include inpatient care, outpatient care, partial hospitalization emergency care and consultation and education. Prior to community mental health, people with mental illness or mental retardation were often shifted into psychiatric hospitals where they received custodial care.

Today, Community Mental Health agencies including BABH, provide a comprehensive range of mental health services and supports for people of all ages, including infant development, child and adult, and geriatric services. Many services are home-based, while others are available at The Arenac Center in Standish, the Mental Health Center in Bay City, or the Children's Services location on 5th Street in Bay City.
