The Breastfeeding club is a part of the Breastfeeding Initiative (BFI), a collaboration between Michigan State University and the Women, Infant, and Child (WIC) program. The support group for nursing mothers meets monthly and provides support, encouragement, and empowerment to nursing mothers to initiate and extend the duration of breastfeeding. Educational programs at the meetings offer problem solving tips, peer to peer advice and encouragement, and enjoyable respite from the demands of motherhood.

New mothers with breastfeeding concerns, who are eligible for the WIC Program, can receive breastfeeding information, encouragement, and support. The Breastfeeding Initiative is a mother-to-mother program that utilizes peer counselors that can work by phone or in person in the home, hospital, or at Bay County Health Department's WIC office. The Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is trained in counseling skills, breastfeeding techniques, and support. She is also trained to provide MSU Extension's Eating Right is Basic nutrition education and hosts a breastfeeding club twice a month.

household income less than 185% of the federal poverty level.
