Mike's Monday Memo for the Week of April 30, 2007

04/30/2007

Here’s what’s up for the week of April 30, 2007:

1. Summer Hours – The ISD’s summer hours will be 7:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. effective June 11, 2007 and will run until August 24, 2007. The Board has approved a four-day work week during this time period. The summer four-day work week starts July 9, 2007 and will run for six weeks until August 17, 2007. The four-day work week hours are 7:15 a.m. until 5:15 p.m. Everyone is to work this schedule in order that we provide continued services to our customers. On the following Fridays, all BAISD buildings will be closed: July 13, July 20, July 27, August 3, August 10, and August 17. Please see the attached document that explains in more detail the summer hours. Please notify your customers of these new hours. Thank you.

2. Work Perks Program – National City is offering to implement a free “Work Perks” program to any ISD employee that direct deposits money into a National City account. This program being offered has incentives such as: Free Interest Checking with Direct Deposit, Free National City Visa CheckCard, Free Online Banking and Online Bill Payment, Select Savings – with no minimum balance and no monthly fee, reduced interest rates on loans, free checks, etc.

Anyone interested in learning more about this National City Program should contact Ginger Stowell at x3254 or stowellg@baisd.net. After she has a master list, Ginger will contact National City to come out to our site for a brief meeting. To view flyer, please click

3. Classroom Visitation – Just as a reminder, if you have a special event or you would like me to see an important event, please give me a call. That is one of the things I like best about my job – seeing first hand all the great things our staff and students are involved in.

4. Award Ceremonies – If you are having an end-of-the-year celebration or award program, I would enjoy the opportunity to attend if my schedule will allow it. I enjoy watching our students’ reactions when they are recognized for their accomplishments.

5. End-of-the-Year - As we approach the end of the regular school year, it’s important to remind our entire staff that the last few months of school are just as important as the first. Please stay focused and keep high expectations for both you and your students. Remember, our students deserve our very best each and every day. Most importantly “KEEP SMILING.” We all work for a great organization that cares deeply about the students we serve.

6. New Superintendents - We have two new Superintendents within our ISD. Michael Dodge is our new Superintendent at Standish-Sterling and John Mertz will be the new Superintendent at Essexville-Hampton beginning July 1, 2007. We wish both of these leaders the best of luck in their new positions.

7. School Election - Just as a reminder, our annual school elections will be held next Tuesday, May 8th for our local school districts. I would encourage you to mark your calendar and get out and vote. A number of our districts will have Board Member elections and Headlee Override. Don’t forget as your votes do count. The only district that won’t have an election is Arenac Eastern; their school board election will be held in November.

8. Enrollment Projections – We want to make the staff aware that we started at 18, 902 students in 2001-02 and in 2011-12, will end up with 16, 923 students. That will be 1,979 students we will be losing over the next 10 years. Please view the attachment regarding this information.

9. Cinco de Mayo – Saturday, May 5, 2007 is a very special day. Ask elementary children and they will tell you just how special May 5th is.

10. “Cats” at Bay City Players - Last weekend “Cats” was preformed by the Bay City Players. Hat’s off to our staff that was involved.

11. Staff Appreciation Week! – Next week, May 6 – 12, 2007, is staff appreciation week. The Bay-Arenac ISD Board of Education salutes all staff members for your commitment to education and the schools and students we serve. Your dedication to this organization is truly appreciated. A small token of the Board’s appreciation will be handed out to all staff next week. Again, thank you for all your hard work this past year.

Words to live by this week:

I cannot give you a formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure, which is - try to please everybody.                             -Herbert Bayard Swope
